CERTs assist with Smoke Alarm Installation in Floating Homes

The Red Cross Home Fire Campaign aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% in five years. Home Fires kill an average of seven people every day and every 40 minutes, an injury from a home fire is reported. In a typical year, deaths and injuries from all natural disasters combined constitute a fraction of the annual casualties from home fires.

The Red Cross and its partners are committed to installing life-saving smoke alarms in as many homes with need as resources allow. Last Saturday, August 19, ten CERT members from around Marin assisted Red Cross volunteers in installing smoke alarms in the Floating Homes community in Sausalito. Over 130 smoke alarms were installed in over 50 homes, along with a review of general safety and preparedness information. Floating Homes present a unique set of emergency challenges and residents were reminded of the importance of including life vests  in their emergency plans.

The Red Cross will be offering this service to other communities, so be on the lookout for notices, if you would like to assist. For more information on the Red Cross’ campaign, check out http://www.redcross.org/news/press-release/Statement-by-the-Red-Cross-on-Home-Fire-Campaign-Smoke-Alarms.
