Learn How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Would you feel confident using your fire extinguisher? Many of us have one in our home yet thankfully few people ever had to use one. In an emergency, you may have seconds to get the extinguisher, pull the pin and use it on a fire. You won’t have time to read directions!

Our firefighters in Southern Marin went into the community to give people the opportunity to learn this new skill and educate them on when and how to use an extinguisher.

4 Steps to Using a Fire Extinguisher

Using the PASS acronym (Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep ), residents of all ages improved their skills and confidence as they put out real fires under the careful supervision of the fire department.

Different fire extinguishers put out various types of fires. For home use, have an A-B-C Fire Extinguisher to cover most fires. Always make sure you have two ways out of a room before you use the extinguisher in case you have to exit quickly.

This event was also a great opportunity to talk about fire safety in and around your home – for more information about fires, visit www.firesafemarin.org.
