Make a plan with your people

Make a plan now, so you know how to find and get in touch with your people when something happens. The same connections that are important in everyday life—with friends, family, neighbors, and communities—are even more crucial in a crisis. It won’t take long.

Making your plan takes three simple steps:

  • Agree on a place to meet if you evacuate.
It is best to choose two known places in case one is inaccessible. Maybe choose a parking lot or a landmark.
  • Choose an out-of-area contact.
An out-of-area contact acts as a hub for information if you can’t reach others close by. For example, have everyone call Aunt Alice in Portland and she will act as a central information source and report back who has checked in and is safe.
  • Make your emergency contact list
Choose a few of your closest people to get in touch with if something happens. Download Make a Plan and share with those people close to you. Put a copy in your Go Bag, your children’s backpacks, and in your car.

Come together

Neighbors knowing neighbors is an important part of any plan.

Remember you are not alone. We think of emergencies as opportunities to come together and support those around you. Sharing a meal, book, or phone charger are even more meaningful in the days after an emergency than before.

If you’re interested in organizing a preparedness class for your group, click here and tell us more.

If you’re part of a Neighborhood Response Group, follow your emergency plan after a disaster to check in on neighbors to ensure everyone has what they need.

If you’re not in a group yet, learn more about forming a Neighborhood Response Group where you live.

Practice a home fire drill

Did you know nearly 90% of all fire-related deaths occur in home fires?

Make sure you and your loved ones know two ways out of the house or apartment complex, have working smoke alarms and have a meet-up location (two options is best) close by, like a nearby mailbox. Include your pets in your drills too.

Practice a house fire drill and reward little kids (and maybe adults too) for participating. We think ice cream is a good incentive.
